What are the advantages of an Honors STS double major or STS minor?

The Honors STS double major or STS minor can help you improve your prospects for a career, graduate or professional school by demonstrating a broad understanding of both your primary major and its social, historical, economic and political ramifications, and showing that you have strengths beyond technical expertise, such as:

How does the Honors STS double major work?

The STS major consists of three main components: core courses, specialization courses, and the senior seminar.

  1. Core: 34 credits covers the program's core requirements. Because there is a great deal of overlap between these course and the GUR, the number of additional courses is minimal.

  2. Specialization: choose one track from those below. Many of these courses can overlap with your major requirements.

  • Technology, Public Policy, and Globalization

  • Media, Aesthetics, and Culture

  • Environmental Studies

  • Ethics and Philosophy of Technology

  • Science Education

  • A custom-designed track, approved by the STS advisor, which may consist partly or entirely of courses from your primary major

  1. Senior seminar: All students in the STS Honors Program are eligible for track-specific sections of HSS 491, the required Honors Humanities Senior Seminar. These sections tie together faculty-specific expertise with the ongoing work of your senior thesis.

What are the requirements for the Honors STS minor?

  1. STS 307 (Fundamentals of Research in STS)

  2. Two 300-level STS courses

  3. STS 490 and STS 491, two linked courses that result in a senior thesis or project

In addition, students in the Honors STS minor are eligible for track-specific sections of HSS 491, the Honors Humanities Senior Seminar.

What will I have to show for my work?

Participants will contribute to disciplinary and thematically-based wikis and blogs, which will be in your control and your responsibility to maintain. All students will also create a web-based portfolio of documents and projects that reflect the depth and breadth of the multi-disciplinary work they have completed at NJIT.
