Summary of the BS/DPT Combined Accelerated Program at NJIT and UMDNJ School of Health Related Professions

The program involves three years at NJIT as a student in the Honors College, followed by three years of entry-level professional physical therapy education at UMDNJ.

Admission to the Program

There are two routes of entry into the program.

1.) Early Admission directly from high school

Students meeting the criteria listed below upon graduation from high school are admitted into both the Honors College at NJIT and the professional phase of the program at UMDNJ.

  1. composite SAT-I scores (Critical Reading and Math) of 1250 or higher, and
  2. top 15%-ile high school rank in class or equivalent,
  3. admission to NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College, and
  4. successful interview with the Director of the Physical Therapy Program or his/her designee in the summer following the freshman year.

Students admitted through this option must follow one of the approved accelerated curricula; maintain their academic status in the Albert Dorman Honors College (3.0 or better cumulative grade point average after the freshman year and a 3.2 or better cumulative grade point average in the remaining years); and meet all other Honors College requirements for the Early Admission guarantee to remain in effect.

2.) Early Admission after completion of three years at NJIT

Students who do not meet those criteria when applying from high school but demonstrate a satisfactory grade point average and satisfactory scores on all three sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) may apply during the third year of undergraduate education to the UMDNJ Physical Therapy admissions committee for admission to the Program through the general applicant pool. Requirements are:

  1. a 3.0 GPA upon completion of all math and science prerequisites,
  2. a 3.0 GPA overall, and
  3. a letter of recommendation from an NJIT faculty member.

Progression through the Program

Students entering by either route will begin their DPT program at UMDNJ after completing three years at NJIT. The BS or BA is awarded by NJIT upon successful completion of the first year of DPT training. For informational purposes, all qualified students must complete the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in their junior year.

Students entering by either route will complete the application to UMDNJ School of Health Related Professions by December 1 of their junior year, and will be notified of acceptance by March 1. Students must confirm their acceptance by March 15.
