The National Science Foundation offers a huge number of opportunities for undergraduates to join research projects each summer. These allow students to experience first-hand how basic research is carried out, and to contribute significantly. Opportunities are available in engineering, materials science, computer and information science, the sciences, and mathematics. Go to the REU web page and search for REU projects by subject area.
NJIT has one REU project for 2009:
- Research Experience for Undergraduates in Nanoscale Materials Science and Engineering at NJIT
Held at the New Jersey Center for Engineered Particulates at NJIT, the Program is designed to expose students to topics associated with nanoscale materials science and engineering as well as their professional development, particularly focused on the research enterprise. A generous stipend is paid for the 10-week program. Application Deadline: March 9, 2009. See the project website for details and application.
This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. The different laboratories each offer different research opportunities (see Choosing a Lab). An appointment is for 10 weeks during the Summer Term (May through August) or for 16 weeks during the Fall Term (August through December) and Spring Term (January through May). Students who are majoring in any branch of science, math, engineering and technology are encouraged to apply. The Department of Energy-Headquarters also has interns majoring in science or public policy. See the web page for details and application. Must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Deadlines: There are two selection rounds for summer; the first one begins February 1, 2009. For more, see THIS PAGE.

NASA offers many research opportunities at several locations.
Here you can search by subject area, region, or institution, or any combination. This page also contains links to other summer research programs and a Handbook on summer research.
RISE - Research Internships in Science and Engineering - gives students in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering and physics the chance to spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects. The doctoral students help integrate the undergraduate directly into the lab work and serve as personal and professional mentors. All participants receive stipends to help cover living expenses, and the partner universities and research institutions provide housing assistance. The application period for Summer 2009 is December 8, 2008 to January 31, 2009.
