2009 Retreat Announcement, Schedule, and Other Information
The Honors Freshman Retreat, held each August, enables incoming freshmen Honors students to get to know one another while learning about the various opportunities and requirements of the Honors College. For the students, the Freshman Retreat is also a time to forge life-long bonds, a place to find mentors to guide them, and an event that is filled with life-long memories.
The Honors Freshman Retreat is held near the end of August just before the new school year begins. An event for both residents and commuters, Freshman Retreat is coordinated with residence hall move-in and other events of NJIT's orientation, and includes not only a special day on campus but also an overnight trip to a camp.
On the first day, Honors students have a chance to get to know their counselors and their fellow freshmen within their groups. On the second day, students, counselors, and staff board buses for the trip to camp. Events at the camp include various kinds of social and competitive games, group contests, and recreational time. Following dinner and a barbecue, students spend the night in the cabins. The next morning all head back to campus to join the general NJIT orientation.
An essential component of the success of Freshman Retreat is the Student Counselors, volunteer Honors students chosen for their ability to facilitate positive interactions among the new students. In the process, they also help inform incoming students about the requirements and expectations of the Honors College and answer any questions about being an Honors student at NJIT. By creating a cheerful atmosphere that gets students excited about participating, the counselors ensure the success of the program. The Retreat is under the overall direction of a Head Counselor.
