As an R1 national research university, NJIT offers abundant opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in cutting-edge research, and the Honors College intentionally leverages this environment to engage scholars early and meaningfully. All scholars begin with Honors Intro to Research Writing (ENGL 102H), a course that builds foundational research and communication skills while pairing them with an NJIT research lab to observe and learn from active projects.

Many scholars choose to continue developing their projects in STS 205H: Intro to Research Methods, while others expand into new areas of inquiry. Each semester, work from both courses is featured at the Honors Interdisciplinary Research Forum. Scholars often advance their inquiry through the Honors Summer Research Institute and the Provost Undergraduate Research Institute, where they receive funding to continue their research in professional lab settings. The Honors College also recognizes bold, interdisciplinary work through the Honors College Moonshot Grants for Engaged Scholarship, which support innovative projects that apply technical abilities to major social and cultural challenges.

Scholars may also apply to the Dean’s Fund for Student Development, which provides support to continue research and to attend or present at academic conferences. The Honors College is home to the Center for Humanities in Extended Reality (CHXR), an interdisciplinary hub where researchers develop digital tools for analysis, interpretation, and storytelling across historical and contemporary environments, further expanding opportunities for creative and impactful research.
