Honors Educational Tracks
At ADHC, we believe that an effective education guides the student through successive courses and educational experiences that impart knowledge and skills that build on one another and enable the student to not only demonstrate an appropriate level of mastery of a field, but also help them situate their work in a broader context. All Dorman Scholars are enrolled in an academic honors track that includes General Education Requirements (GER) and major-specific courses.
The Medical Humanities, City Leadership & Civic Engagement, and Global Studies tracks consist of 9 Honors-only courses, designated colloquia, and community service. One course can be replaced with an optional approved milestone experience. Please see the Weekly Update or the ADHC Canvas Site to fill out the “Tracks Application of Intent Form” to express interest in Medical Humanities, City Leadership & Civic Engagement, or Global Studies.
There are currently four honors educational tracks:
Multidisciplinary Honors Track
Scholars are enrolled in the 11-course Multidisciplinary Track by default, and can then choose focused interdisciplinary tracks best suited to their academic and professional goals. Coursework in this track is drawn from across the university’s majors and departments. The multidisciplinary track is fulfilled primarily through foundational science and advanced math courses, and courses focusing on improving writing and communication skills. Read more here.
Medical Humanities Track
The Medical Humanities Honors Track is an interdisciplinary track that focuses the honors curriculum in the field of medical humanities, giving a broad understanding of medicine combining humanities, social science, and the arts. Scholars take 9 courses which provide an in-depth examination of issues surrounding health and disease - from personal to global issues. Coursework and guest speakers explore the social, literary, and cultural expressions of health and disease, as well as the economic, racial, and environmental factors in health outcomes. Participants are encouraged to use their service hours in one of our many health-related partnerships. Read more here.
City Leadership & Civic Engagement Track
The ADHC City Leadership and Civic Engagement Track is an interdisciplinary track that focuses the honors curriculum on service to the local community. Scholars will develop leadership skills while using their technical and major area expertise to serve our neighbors in Newark. Coursework explores the history, society, and culture of Newark and issues of economic, racial, and environmental injustice. Leaders within the community are brought in to speak about current opportunities and challenges in the city. The final project is a service-learning project to support a local community organization. The Joan and Albert Dorman Community Education Fund helps support excellent projects in this program. Read more here.
Global Studies Track
In preparation for the interconnected world of the 21st century, the Global Studies track provides scholars with interdisciplinary, national, and international opportunities to become creative problem-solvers in a global context. Honors courses in this track introduce scholars to a broad range of historical and present-day cultures from around the world. In addition to coursework and co-curricular opportunities, this track includes a study abroad component. Read more here.
