Women With STEAM

Women With STEAM (WWS) is an Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC) initiative to engage, empower, and incentivize Dorman Scholars who identify as women and non binary students and are pursuing academic careers at NJIT in STEAM disciplines. It is run collaboratively by the WWS Committee made up of our current scholars, alumnae, and the ADHC team.  

WWS organizes events such as the Meet and Greet, where we get together and welcome new members, host talks on gender-related topics, and networking events. We are launching a Mentoring Program. ADHC current scholars and alumnae can reach out to  honors@njit.edu if interested in participating in this initiative. 

In addition to programmatic components, the WWS program has been awarding a scholarship to select incoming scholars who identify as woman and non-binary.

Selected scholars are invited to all events and have the opportunity to become a leader within the program. This scholarship is only open to incoming first-year Dorman scholars. More information can be found here. 

The Gender Gap

There is a gender gap in the science, technology, engineering, architecture, and mathematics (STEAM) workforce.

In 1970, women made up 38% of all U.S. workers and 8% of STEM workers. By 2019, women made up 48% of all workers, but still made up only 27% of the STEM population.

Women with STEM jobs earn 33% more than women in non-STEM jobs, but for every $1.00 earned by a man in STEM, women in STEM earn only $0.86.

45 percent of architecture graduates are women, but only 25.3% in the profession are women.

Increasing numbers of college students are identifying as transgender or gender nonconforming (TGNC), including many who will enter college intending to major in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. 

These basic statistics demonstrate the need to encourage and support young women pursuing the increasingly important STEAM disciplines.
