Innovation & Collaboration

TEDxNJIT - Innovation and Collaboration will feature leaders from business, academia, and the arts exploring new modes of collaboration, celebrating art in the urban environment, social entrepreneurship, new media music, and self awareness.  Tickets are $30, $15 for students.  Register at www.TEDxNJIT.com.

• Gerald Adams, known as the Millennial MentorTM and co-founder of Fownders, a non-profit community of entrepreneurs in Newark
• Dr. Tara Alvarez, NJIT professor of biomedical engineering who works on vision-related research
• Newark Mayor Ras Baraka who is fostering new collaborations on downtown and neighborhood redevelopment, education initiatives, and fighting crime
• Ron Gold, founder of LeanOnWe, a startup company that focuses on delivering improved home care experience at a more affordable price

Weathering the Storms

The Technology and Society Forum of NJIT presents "Weathering the Storms in Newark."  Street flooding caused by storms is much more than an inconvenience of urban life - it disrupts economic activity and hinders services provided by first responders.  By stressing the capacity of sewers and water-treatment plants, flooding can also increase microbial threats to health.

Contending with this infrastructure challenge in the City of Newark will be the topic of this presentation featuring Howard Neukrug, former water commissioner of Philadelphia, as keynote speaker.  Technical experts from the region, including representatives from the Newark Department of Engineering and the Newark Department of Water and Sewer Utilities, will join Neukrug in exploring the problems flooding presents and the range of solutions available.

As Philadelphia's water commissioner, Neukrug created the city's $2.5 Billion Green City, Clean Waters Program, a revolutionary approach to urban land and water management.  Currently a Senior Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, he advises cities and utilities in areas such as civil engineering, urban planning and sustainability.  He is also establishing a regional and global Water Policy Center.

70 Acres In Chicago: Cabrini Green

​Co-sponsored by the Albert Dorman Honors College and the Law, Technology and Society program at NJIT, this file documents the demolition of Chicago's infamous Cabrini Green public housing development.  With its prime centrla location, Cabrini was hailed as a public housing triumph and demonized as an urban disaster.  Beginning in 1995, it was demolished and then repackaged as a mixed income development, where, unsurprisingly, the former, largely black residents have been marginalized or driven away.  70 Acres documents this upheaval, from the razing of the first buildings in 1995 to the clashes in the mixed-income neighborhoods a decade later.

She Kills Monsters

Rutgers-NJIT Theatre Program

​This play by Qui Nguyen, directed by Louis Wells, is a comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games.  It tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly.  When Agnes finds Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly's refuge.  In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

DRONES — ICONS OF AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Director's Project

This program features student-directed short plays from comedy to drama to the absurd.

NJIT String and Wind Ensembles

The musical talent of the NJIT community will once again be featured when the String and Wind Ensembles take the stage. The string ensemble is conducted by Karen Pinoci, and the wind ensemble is conducted by Nicholas Santoro. These ensembles are made up of NJIT students, staff, faculty, and guest artists. ANYONE who plays an instrument is welcome to join.
