The Newark Mayor’s Honors Scholars Program, established in 2019, supports exceptional students who live in Newark and meet the eligibility requirements for admission to the Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).
Each year, up to three incoming first-year students are selected as Mayor’s Scholars based on their academic and service accomplishments, demonstrated financial need (as determined by federal guidelines), and recommendations from the Newark superintendent.
Mayor’s Scholars receive a four-year housing scholarship, covering the full cost of on-campus housing, in addition to their Honors merit award.
Program Experience
Mayor’s Scholars take part in the Honors Leadership and Civic Engagement (LCE) Honors Track, a service-learning and leadership track designed to help students develop leadership skills while using their academic expertise to serve the Newark community.
The program encourages students to:
- Identify and articulate their personal and professional interests
- Contribute to building sustainable community impact
- Develop as engaged, ethical, and innovative leaders
Through these experiences, the Newark Mayor’s Scholars Program seeks to foster the future leaders of Newark and the nation.
